Rogue Engineering El Diablo for E46 M3 |
We have a new favorite muffler for the BMW E46 M3. I recently put El Diablo on my 2004 E46 M3, and I can personally attest that this muffler together with a Borla midpipe is deep, throaty and NO rasp. This ia an absolutely KILLER combination that is about 10% to 20% louder and a bit deeper than the Borla midpipe and Borla muffler combo. Below are pictures from my personal vehicle.
Please don't stop reading here. There is some great technical info about the El Diablo muffler below.

Oh yeah...want to hear it? Check out the video on our Tech Info page by clicking the button above.

They stopped production on the E46 M3 in 2006.
It's not like Rogue Engineering to rest on its laurels when it comes to development of any performance product. In fact, we are typically the first to market of product in many instances. However, when it came to the E46 M3 exhaust, we were definitely NOT the first ones on the block. By last count, there were already over 20 different companies offering exhausts for the E46 M3. Some companies even offer multiple selections (as if they couldn't make up their mind which was best!).
After listening and installing countless aftermarket exhausts in our own facility, we felt we had heard and seen enough of the good, bad and very cheezy. We recognized that most E46 M3 owners had very specific requirements to meet that they found in other exhausts out there. What you see here is the culmination is the best features of many of the exhaust systems found today, at an affordable price with the performance you come to expect from a Rogue Engineering product.
El Diablo Features
The RE El Diablo is made to fit exactly like factory. Features of El Diablo include:
- Weighs only 29 1/2 lbs., 1/2 the weight of the factory muffler! (factory is 56 lbs.)
- 100% T-304 stainless steel construction, including flanges, internals
- Fully mandrel bent tubing, no crimps or flattened areas
- Mill-finished pipes and muffler, mirror polished quad 80mm angle cut, staggered tips.
- Full TIG welded contruction, no lock seams or pinch welds.
- Rogue Engineering logo tastefully stamped in the body of the muffler
- Optional 80mm Titanium Race tips
- Flow-through design does not create muffler "hot spots" found on chambered mufflers
- Optimized tubing sizes and minimized bends maintain exhaust velocity without compromising necessary backpressure
- Deep, throaty tone, without the drone. Virtually silent at idle, but appropriate tone at higher RPMs.
- Will not change ground clearance
- Will not void factory warranty
- Will not affect emissions
- No permanent modifications required for installation
El Diablo Design
Much development was spent to optimize the El Diablo exhaust system. To understand the improvements, it is important to see how a stock exhaust functions.
|
 |
The image above shows a stockexhaust, and the highlighted "chamber" which exhaust gasesflow. After these gases collect in the chamber, they exitthrough the exhaust tips. This chambered collection areaallowfor backpressure to build, important for naturally aspiratedvehicles. The problem with this design (and other exhaustsdesigned with this feature), is that flow is ultimately impeded athigher RPMs. This translates to adequate performance at thelower RPMs and compromised flow at higher RPMs. |
 |
What makes El Diablo different is that it is a true "flow through" exhaust system. There are no design elements to slow down the exhaust gases when they speed up with higher RPMs. Part of the challenge of this design is optimizing tubing diameters to allow for adequate backpressure while preventing faster exhaust flow from being blocked or slowed. If you build a system with tubing diameters that are too larger, it results in an exhaust with poor street performance. Tubing diameters that are too small will restrict higher RPMs. The key is a balance, all while producing an exhaust that has a nice deep, mellow tone (a function of muffler size, perforated tubing size, and perforation size). With El Diablo, we have met all of our design requirements.

The TRACK EDITION El Diablo
|
The TRACK EDITION El Diablo offers the same features of the standard El Diablo and it's "flow through" design, but ups the ante by increasing the tubing diameter to 60mm offering 36% more flow over our standard El Diablo. We recommend this limited production El Diablo for those only with forced induction (superchargers or turbo) or vehicles destined for full track duty with euro style headers.
We do not recommend this for street driven, naturally aspirated M3s as the increased tubing diameter does take away from some of the vehicle's lower end torque performance.

Why not full titanium?
While full titanium exhausts have their merits, we decided against a full titanium unit for a number of reasons. Here are some of the pros/cons of the full titanium systems we've seen.
|
| Titanium Exhaust Feature Pros |
Titanium Exhaust Feature Cons |
- Extremely lightweight (between 12-26 lbs)
- Cool sound
- Unique look
- Will not rust
|
- High cost
- Frequent failure rate (cracking welds and hangers)
- Difficult and expensive to repair (only to have it fail again)
- Difficult to control sound
- Difficult to mandrel bend
|
We decided to produce our system in100% full T-304 stainless steel because of its consistent strengthcharacteristics, corrosion resistance, and wide range of materials (important forcontrolling sound and exhaust flow). At 26 lbs. for ourproduction system, we have reached the weight of some full titaniumsystems costing twice as much but with the benefits of usingstainless steel.

Do you like apples? How you like dem apples!
Equipped with optional equipment, your E46 M3 cansee significant power gains with the El Diablo and Rasp Pipe. Boltingon Rogue Engineering specific headers, intake, and software, combinedwith the Rogue Engineering Rasp Pipe and El Diablo exhaust, consistentpower over stock was achieved without dips of hp or torque. More gainswould be expect if performed with 93 octane gasoline. Of course, individual results will always vary. |
 |
Dyno runs performed with 91octane gas. Results are expected to be higher with 93 octane. |
