2005 BMW
Z4 Review
The BMW Z4 roadster reminds us why we buy these types of cars. With sexy
lines, a stiff chassis and large brakes, the
Z4 provides a great driving pleasure. With the well-respected 3.0L inline 6
cylinder engine under the hood, the Z4 is no snail. aFe

has always expressed an
interest in BMWs and knew that the Z4 was in need of a Magnum FORCE
upgrade. Project leader, Eric Bajza, tore out the restrictive OE intake system
and went to drawing board. What Eric and the aFe engineering staff came up with
was a sweet looking intake system and an engine note so hypnotic that

will keep you on the redline.
Here is how aFe did it.
Our test car was a
2005 BMW Z4 3.0L-6cyl borrowed from a local BMW Car Club of America member. The aFe intake system (PN 54-10651 for the
2.5L and 54-10671 for the 3.0L) consists of a powder-coated
heat shield, a high flow conical air filter, a billet aluminum air filter adapter, a
brushed aluminum lid and a complete installation hardware kit. Installation time
is less than 30 minutes and installs with basic hand tools. In less than half an
hour, you
will gain 11 hp and 14 ft-lbs of torque. Here is how aFe did it.

Safety first. Before we start the installation,
we made sure the engine had properly cooled down and the negative terminal on the battery
was disconnected in order to prevent any injuries or mishaps. Our
technician, Adrian, disconnected the MAF sensor. The air box comes out with the
removal of two 10 mm screws. The MAF sensor is carefully separated from the air
box and the air box is removed from the engine. The aFe housing and air filter
adapter are fastened together with classy looking button head screws. The
housing assembly is lower into place and secured with the factory screws. Take a
look at the huge billet MAF adapter and you will say "WOW". This piece is so
beefy it just screams power. The secret lies in the 3

angle adapter. The huge high
flow conical air filter is installed onto the adapter and clamped down.
Finally the beautiful brushed aluminum heat shield is fasten to the unit. With the
installation now complete, we were off to the Dyno!
We
strapped the Z4 to the Mustang Dyno and the Z4 screamed with a fierce growl.
We smashed the throttle and the rear tires break loose!
Once the rollers stopped, we

registered a 11 hp gain and a tire splitting 14 ft-lbs of
torque! The power band was smooth all the way to the redline. The simplicity of
this kit coupled together with the huge power gain makes this kit a worthwhile
investment for your Z4.
